I signed up with Team in Training last year due to my friend Lisa White, and her struggle with leukemia. She lost that fight over the weekend. This is a letter my friend Rob sent out this morning.

Hello friends

On Saturday, Lisa White lost her 20 month battle with leukemia. She
was at home, surrounded by her family and friends. She fought til the
end (no surprise if you knew her), and went out on her own terms. Lisa
was the sweetest most caring person I've ever known, and I had the
immense gift and privilege of knowing her my whole life. She had a
gorgeous smile and a laugh that could brighten your week. She
championed the philosophy of enjoying life and taught us not to take
it so seriously. She lives on in the many many many lives she touched.

All of your support for her, her family and her friends throughout
this ordeal has been appreciated. On a personal note, all of your
support for me has been so so great and I thank you all for your love,
your sweet emails and phone calls, your compassion and your
understanding.

If you are in the Atlanta area, there will be a memorial service this
Wednesday, Nov. 22. Place and time to be determined. I will send out
another email to those who live close by. The info will also be posted
on her CarePage. We are also setting up a page for donations to the
Bone Marrow Transplant organization in her honor.

Don't be sad for Lisa - she wouldn't approve. Instead, have a drink,
share a joke and tell people in your life what they mean to you. This
is how Lisa lived.

peace.
rob

I'd splashed around some in the Pcific on my three ill-fated surfing adventures, and of course I've taken a quick dive in the water before. But there's a huge difference between doing that and continually sticking your face in the water to swim. Making myself do that, and then breathe normally while swimming, was one of the hardest things I've done so far during this training: Not physically, but mentally. It took me ten minutes or so to begin swimming normally, and even then I had trouble with sighting and swimming a straight line, and bumping into others. I also swallowed a ton of water. A ton. Of Water.

When they called time, I almost didn't want to come out. I was just coming up on 2/3 of a mile, and finally getting into a groove. Although the coaches said we had to warm up, I think the real key was to let my face get completely numb--as you can maybe tell from the rictus attempt at a smile I made as I emerged.

Finally, I'm a mere $54 dollars away from my Team in Training fundraising minimum. (Though I still have another $1200 to go before I hit my goal.) If you'd like to make a contribution, please check out my fundraising page. You can find a link there that shows how the money is spent.

I went back to the Koret Center last night, determined to make a little more progress with my swimming. Jessamyn's comment on my last post was pretty encouraging, and Harper went with me last night, which set a nicer tone all around. But I'm still wary of the water.

Prior to going there, I went to Sports Basement and purchased an embarrasing pair of swim trunks to replace my board shorts. This was largely due to the coaches at our last TNT training session telling us "don't show up in board shorts."

Gotcha.

I still didn't understand the notations on the training sheet (having missed the first coached pool session due to my trip to Florida) but I decided to try to swim the "pro" (there are three training levels: pro, elite and age) distance anyway without worrying about specific strokes. 2 x 100 free on 10"? I have no idea what that means.

But I knew the total was 1800, so that's what I shot for. I did the freestyle, the sidestroke, the backstroke, the breast stroke, and used various floatation things in the same ways that others were using them. An hour later, as I dragged my weary body out of the pool, I realized that I hadn't counted my warm-up, and so I'd actually swum 1900 yards (although, at the time I was under the impression I was swimming meters). I'd done it. Crazy.

At home, in bed last night, I was wondering exactly how much 1900 meters was in miles. I knew a kilometer is roughly 6/10 of a mile, but I was exhausted, and couldn't force my brain to do math. I'm going to have to swim 1.5 miles in the open ocean, I know that. But what fraction of that had I swum at the Koret Center? I fell out of bed and crawled over to the computer to ask the google, and was completely re-energized when I got my answer: I'd just swum a mile!*

Wow. I can do this.

Finally, once again, I'd like to encourage you to donate money via my Team in Training fundraising page. I'm trying to raise $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since I paid the $200 race entry fee myself, none of your money will go to race overhead, rather it will go directly to the society.

*First I looked up the Koret Center pool's distance, and discovered I was swimming yards not meters
