Alien

I have this thing about birds. And so when I was back in the South all last week, I kept a keen eye open for species I can't see out here in California. Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, Blue Birds, I saw a lot. 28 different species (identified) in all, not al of which were new to my list--either life or annual.

But by far the most interesting that I saw was this little guy. Or girl. At my aunt and uncle's house, some birds had built a nest in the garage atop a half-inch wide strip of molding. No wider than your index finger at the bottom, it was perhaps five inches across at the top.

My cousin was telling me about it, and when we went outside to look, we saw this baby that had just hatched peeping its head up, mouth agape.
