The Killing of a Flanger
Å. The Cure is playing at a coffeeshop where I'm working this morning. I love it. It takes me back. I once loved The Cure. But I had never noticed, until this morning, how much they relied on the flanger. Almost every song; flanged.
ß. I don't know where my flanger is. It was bright green. Vivid. Very 80s. Purchased in the 80s, in fact. I used to love hooking it up to my guitar, and stomping it. Peeeeeeeowwwwwwwweeeeeeepeeeeeeowwwwwwweeeeee. Who stole my flanger? Give it back.
Æ. You don't hear the flanger quite as much as you once did. I think it had its heyday at some point around 1988. When bands use it today, it sounds almost old-fashioned.
Œ. I used to read Guitar Player, quite a bit. There was no reason for this. But let's forget that. I remember reading an article about the Black Crowes in Guitar Player. Now, I understand how hard it is to write something original on the same subject for a magazine every month--how do you think I earn my living? But this article, a brief 250 or so word intro/profile, contained the single most cringe-worthy line in any magazine artice I've ever read. I remember it verbatim today, sixteen or however-many years later.
Ω. "Hand these guys a flanger, and they might punch you in the face!"

Playing, as in 'on a cd player,' or as in, 'all washed up and can't even open for the Moddy Blues at the county fair?" Heh. That would be funny-the Cure in a coffee shop.
BTW, I went to wikipedia and downloaded the sample of flanging. What the hell is an .ogg file? Anyone?
This post confused the hell out of me. First of all, the Cure were not in your coffee shop. I get that now but it did cause me to double-take. I know you saw Beck playing in a Taco bar once, and well, these things happen - to YOU - so it took me a second. A really excited, wonderful second.
Next I was wondering when you stopped freelancing to work in a coffee shop. I couldn't get my head around how you would possibly be inclined to satisfy customers in an environment that is pretty stressful, mechanical, and that also emphasizes hygiene and timeliness.
But I came to my senses and realized you would never work *for* a coffee shop, but *in* a coffee shop to be sure. To be very sure. You are probably reading this from inside of one RIGHT NOW.
panurge, if you want to get your flange on it is probably easier to just pick up an old Cure album. Or visit Mat's coffee shop.
Ogg is an open-source audio file format; supposed to be better quality than mp3, but you need to get plug-ins to play them on a Mac, at least. I haven't bothered listening to any, so I can't veryify their quality.
